Every Life Is Beautiful

Hi Friends!

Since I last wrote we have received an update from our agency that we have moved from the fifteenth spot on the waiting list for a referral (for a baby) to the thirteenth spot.  Things are moving slowly, and we are so ready to meet our baby.  But, we are trusting that there is a specific child that is meant to be a Baker and that God has the timing totally worked out.

I wanted to share with you about something else that I am really excited about- This weekend the movie, October Baby, will be released in theaters across the nation.  Billy and I had the privilege of previewing this film a month or two ago, and it was FANTASTIC!  It is being distributed by Provident Films (the same people who brought us Courageous) and was directed and produced by the Erwin Brothers (who happen to attend the Church at Brook Hills- David Platt’s church, for you Walnut Streeters).   Here is the synopsis from the film’s website:

As the curtain rises, Hannah hesitantly steps onto the stage for her theatrical debut in college. Yet before she can utter her first lines, Hannah—unscripted—collapses in front of the stunned audience.
After countless medical tests, all signs point to one underlying factor: Hannah's difficult birth. This revelation is nothing compared to what she then learns from her parents: she was actually adopted … after a failed abortion attempt.
Bewildered, angered, and confused, Hannah turns for support to Jason, her oldest friend. Encouraged by his adventurous spirit, Hannah joins his group of friends on a Spring Break road trip, embarking on a journey to discover her hidden past … and find hope for her unknown future.
In the midst of her incredible journey, Hannah finds that life can be so much more than what you have planned.

October Baby was really well made, entertaining, and compelling. It is obviously dealing with a pretty heavy subject matter, and I shed quite a few tears while watching.  However, I also laughed quite a bit.  I left feeling burdened for women and babies but also uplifted by the message of hope and forgiveness found in Christ.

It is a fictional story, but not fantasy- the reality is that abortion is more prevalent in our culture than most Christians care to admit, and there is a percentage of these abortions that do “fail,” meaning the baby does indeed survive despite the doctor’s efforts.  I am pleading with you to go see this movie, first of all, because it shows us yet another truth about the atrocities of abortion.  It does so in a tactful and graceful manner that I hope would leave anyone who has experienced the hurt that accompanies abortion finding mercy, forgiveness, and hope.  For others of us, it is a poignant reminder of the beauty of life-  The movie’s tagline is “Every life is beautiful.”

Another reason to go see October Baby is that we, as Christians, need to support films that bring the hope we have in Christ into theaters across the nation.  This movie has the opportunity to touch thousands upon thousands of lives.  However, if the movie does not have a successful opening weekend, theaters will pull it almost immediately, and they will hesitate to bring other “Christian” films into their theaters.

Lastly, (and probably of least importance, but whatever it takes to get you into the theater…) to my dear Samford friends, you will love seeing our beautiful campus in several scenes- most of the movie was shot in Birmingham!  And if that doesn’t do it for you, the film stars Jasmine Guy (Whitley from the Cosby Show spinoff, A Different World) and John Schneider (Bo Duke from Dukes of Hazzard and Jonathan Kent from Smallville).  What more could you possibly want from a movie?! J  If you’re looking for something to do this weekend, go see October Baby.  You will be so glad you did.
